    Hospice IntroductionHospice Defined

Hospice care is formally defined as “a program of palliative and supportive care services that provides physical, psychological, social and spiritual care for the dying persons, their families, and other loved ones.” Diagnoses appropriate for hospice referral go beyond cancer and include illnesses, such as dementia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, end-stage heart failure, or any other condition that is in a terminal phase.

The goal of hospice care is not to cure the patient of illness. It is intended to allow the patient to remain as comfortable as possible with family support and at home until their death. The hospice goal not only addresses the physical needs of the patient, but also includes the spiritual and emotional health needs of the patient and caregiver.
