Today, many cancer survivors face a little known, but persistent condition called lymphedema. When the lymphatic system is doing its job, there’s equilibrium between the amount of fluid leaving the tissue and the amount that is reabsorbed. However, when this system is compromised, there can be an excess of fluid leaving the tissue that results in swelling or edema, otherwise known as lymphedema.
Although some people have a congenital defect of the lymphatic system, cancer or cancer-related treatment is the most common cause, affecting about half of all cancer survivors. Fortunately, Central Oregon Home Health and Hospice has a nurse and physical therapist who are Certified Lymphedema Therapists.
